These are some of the pictures that I took while I was in Kukup last week with some of the friends from the painting class. They were taken in the morning at 5 – 6 am. The place was so serene at that moment in the morning. I took so many of them and have not gotten time to sort them out. Will post some of the better pictures soon. Enjoy!
A few days ago, we went for a two days excursion trip with painting class to a small fishing village called Kukup in Malaysia. It was two hours bus trip from Singapore to Kukup. I had never tried any outdoor sketching and this was my very first time outdoor sketching. The trip was quite fun with friends and family tagged along. Sketching outdoor with a bunch of friends helped me a lot. They pointed out where I missed and complimented where I did right. We probably might go out again in the near future. Next destination perhaps to Bali? 🙂

Awhile back there was this plan by the government to redevelop Ubin island. However to much public outcry prompted the government to shelve the idea for at least another 10 years or when it is necessary to develop in the future. Many residents either moved back to mainland or just continue to live there the way they were.
Ubin is a time capsule, locked in the 1960s. Electricity is still obtained from diesel operated generators and water is drawn from wells. As of April 2013, the Government began imposing rent on the villagers. Now though, Ubin residents that have owned the land for decades have to pay temporary occupation license (TOL) fees of $6 to $35 a month. This amount is expected to increase over the next five years.
Many probably do not know that any motorized vehicles here are controlled items. There is this Certificate of Entitlement or COE which is a quota license received from a successful winning bid in an open bid uniform price auction which grants the legal right of the holder to register, own and use of the limited road space in Singapore for a period of 10 years. After 10 years we have to scrap the car or get a new COE at the market price. But this is not applied to vehicles in Ubin island.

Generally there is no big wave in the island and the water is quite calm. I guess it is because Ubin island is sandwiched between Malaysia and Singapore mainland. So don’t expect any big waves at Johor strait.
Kayaking adventure in the island is one of the activities you can do. I believe it should be kind of excited to be able to kayak in open water. Paddling through the sea and mangrove areas and seeing abundant wildlife including Oriental-pied hornbills, water monitors and possibly pink dolphins! Your expert guide will point out these animals and inform you of their ecological significance.
These are the bumboats that took us to Pulau Ubin look like. According to Wikipedia A bumboat is a small boat used to ferry supplies to ships moored away from the shore. Originally referring to a scavenger’s boat, the name comes from the combination of the Dutch word for a canoe—”boomschuit” (“boom” meaning “tree”), and “boat”. But In Singapore the term “bumboat” is applied to small water taxis and boats that take tourists on short tours.
Bumboat comes in different sizes. Some bumboats have windows and some don’t. In that case be prepared to have raincoat or umbrella handy when it rains and when you are in it 🙂 The trip to Ubin is quite short and pleasant. It only takes less than 15 minutes to the island and costs $2.50/person/trip (USD 2.00). The boat will leave with 12 people and boat operator will collect the money in the boat before leaving. Bumboats operate from 6 am to 8 pm, so make sure that you don’t miss that last boat out of the island.
The crazy and impulsive decision of mine last weekend landed us in Pulau Ubin. It rained throughout the day while we were there. It did not dampen our mood, on the contrary it was kinda fun walking in the rain with no one around and the day was so much cooler because of it.
Pulau Ubin (Ubin island) is located northeast of Singapore mainland and the second largest island after Sentosa island. It is the last remaining village/Kampong that can be found in Singapore. There are only about a hundred villagers living there. The bumboat ride from Changi point ferry terminal is about 10 to 15 minutes to the island. It costs SGD 2.50/person and the boat will leave when they have 12 people.
Once you are in the island you can rent a bicycle touring the island; mountain biking; bird watching; nature walking; tracking; fishing; camping at designated areas and kayaking. It is lots of fun if you don’t mind getting dirty and shedding sweat doing those activities. Alternatively, you can take a van touring the island.
