The only standing structure after the 2004 Asian tsunami in Aceh Indonesia is Baiturrahman Grand Mosque. Indonesia (Aceh) was the hardest hit country which lost almost 170.000 people and the tsunami flattened most of the landscape of the Banda Aceh city. This 130 years old mosque only suffered minor cracks and had served as a temporary shelter for displaced people and reopened for prayers after two weeks. A decade after the tsunami, resilient Acehness have rebuilt their city with government and humanitarian assistance. Although scars still remain, life goes on. The mosque too has been restored and is still as grand as ever.
