Photo #22 – Tanah Lot, Bali/Indonesia (1/2)

I took so many pictures while we were in Bali but only few are decent enough to be posted.  Very unfortunate it was cloudy all day when we visited Tanah Lot and I had no chance of capturing that famous Tanah Lot sunset for you to see. Usually at around 6 pm and when there is low tide, people are allowed to visit that tiny rock island by walking across. They are greeted by priests at the entrance and not allowed to walk inside the temple.

These are some of the pictures that I took while I was in Kukup last week with some of the friends from the painting class.  They were taken in the morning at 5 – 6 am. The place was so serene at that moment in the morning.  I took so many of them and have not gotten time to sort them out.  Will post some of the better pictures soon.  Enjoy!

Photo #16 – Life Goes On @ Ubin, Singapore (6/7)

Awhile back there was this plan by the government to redevelop Ubin island. However to much public outcry prompted the government to shelve the idea for at least another 10 years or when it is necessary to develop in the future. Many residents either moved back to mainland or just continue to live there the way they were.

Ubin is a time capsule, locked in the 1960s. Electricity is still obtained from diesel operated generators and water is drawn from wells. As of April 2013, the Government began imposing rent on the villagers. Now though, Ubin residents that have owned the land for decades have to pay temporary occupation license (TOL) fees of $6 to $35 a month. This amount is expected to increase over the next five years.

Many probably do not know that any motorized vehicles here are controlled items. There is this Certificate of Entitlement or COE which is a quota license received from a successful winning bid in an open bid uniform price auction which grants the legal right of the holder to register, own and use of the limited road space in Singapore for a period of 10 years. After 10 years we have to scrap the car or get a new COE at the market price. But this is not applied to vehicles in Ubin island.

Photo #14 – Waves @ Ubin, Singapore (4/7)

Generally there is no big wave in the island and the water is quite calm. I guess it is because Ubin island is sandwiched between Malaysia and Singapore mainland. So don’t expect any big waves at Johor strait.
